Kicking off the Startup Grind 2018 global conference was the well-known head of hair, the one, the only, Derek Andersen. Thank you, Derek — we love ya!

If you’ve ever been to a Startup Grind event, the first thing you learn is the core values of:

Helping others before yourself

Giving first

Making friends

“We believe in making friends, not contacts. We believe in giving, not taking. We believe in helping others before helping yourself. We are truly passionate about helping founders, entrepreneurs and startups succeed. We intend to make their startup journey less lonely, more connected, and more memorable.”

An important thing to remember about events is that there are 100 other places these speakers could be, so in true Startup Grind fashion, speakers typically get a standing ovation. It builds the energy in the room. And given the stereotypical entrepreneurial crouch over a desk 10+ hours per day, it’s a healthy alternative to staying in your seat.

Surpassing all expectations, Startup Grind has grown into the global network for entrepreneurs.

“We almost shut the whole thing down after MC Hammer spoke. Dream achieved. Done. But of course, we didn’t.”

Startup Grind’s story is one of very humble beginnings. The first event was hosted in 2013, just south of San Francisco in Mountain View, with terrible pizza, and only a few members in attendance. It has since grown to a vast global network spanning 115 countries and over 365 chapters.

Thousands have attended and spoken through various chapters in cities all over the world. With chapters in every continent, Startup Grind hosts entrepreneurs in cities from New York to LA, Melbourne to Milan, Tel Aviv to Port Au Prince, Beirut to Lima.
